Our Level System

We standardise your fluency level based on a framework used around the world...

By basing our level system according to the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL), we are able to provide reliable and objective ratings of your linguistic ability. Please find the rubric of the CEFRL in the next section below.

As well, if you’d like a little help gauging your language level, please take your choice of either Spanish, English or Czech language proficiency tests. Once we review your results, we will be able to assist in choosing the class that best suits you.

The CERFL Rubric

A1 Level

This course is focused on beginners. Here, you will learn basic phrases such as the use of familiar everyday expressions. Once completed, you will be able to introduce yourself as well as ask and answer questions about personal details.

A2 Level

Upon completion of this elementary course, you will be able to understand frequently used expressions such as: basic personal and family information, shopping and local geography. Additionally, you will be able to communicate in daily basic situations.

B1 Level

As an intermediate level, you will be able to deal with most situations that are likely to arise whilst travelling to an area where that language is spoken. In addition, you will be able to discuss topics freely, which are familiar, and/or of personal interest.

B2 Level

In this upper intermediate course you will possess the ability to understand the main ideas of both concrete and abstract topics - including technical discussions within your career field. You will be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible with minimal strain from either party.

C1 Level

As this is an advanced course, once completed, you will possess the capacity to express yourself fluently and spontaneously without the obvious searching for expressions. You will be able to use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.

C2 Level

This is our highest proficiency course. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. You will also be able to express yourself spontaneously and very fluently.

Any Questions?

Take a look at some of our FAQs...

Why does SLI base its curriculum on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages?

The CEFRL is the most commonly used guideline for learning languages across Europe and is even starting to gain popularity in countries outside of the continent.  We use the CERFL because its objective measurement of language-learning is a standard instrument used across Europe.  This creates a consistent curriculum for any of our students, regardless of where they’re from.

How would I know what fluency level I’m best suited for?

By taking our complementary language placement test on this page!  Make sure you save the grading scale on this page, as it will let you know which level is most suitable for you!

What if I feel like my fluency level is in-between two levels?

Not to worry, this is actually quite common.  Let’s say you know enough Czech ahead of the Total Beginner’s Course yet feel as if you’re not ready to progress to the Elementary Course – that’s okay! We offer intermediary courses that help you prepare even more so for the next fluency level. You also have the possibility of taking custom private lessons in order to be prepared for the next fluency level.  To put it simply: at Spanish Language Institute, we stop at nothing to ensure you can succeed in learning a new language!
